Summary

Beneath the still surface of a lake lurks a monster with needle sharp teeth. Hungry and ready to pounce. Jenny Greenteeth has never spoken to a human before, but when a witch is thrown into her lake, something makes Jenny decide she is worth saving. Temperance doesn't know why her village has suddenly turned against her, only that it has something to do with the malevolent new pastor. Though they have nothing in common, those two must band together on a magical quest to defeat the evil that threatens Jenny's lake and Temperance's family, as well as the soul of Britain.

Review & Thoughts

I picked this one up as it was likened to a T. Kingfisher book. I can see why but it didn't hold the same magic for me. It was another meh book for me adding to my recent reading slump. I am writing this review weeks after having read it and nothing from the story really stands out to talk about.

A witch gets thrown in the lake as part of a witch trial, as the Jenny Greenteeth who lives in the lake is a little odd she decides save her and for some reason grows attached (maybe as she has similar eyes to her daughter which we later find out has been dead for 50 years, or maybe because she is a mum and having lost her own child feels for the human). Anyway, turns out the priest isn't just your average horrible human male but a fae of pure evil who's magic is too strong that they need help. So off they go on a journey with the travelling fae trader who turns out to be the closest thing to a friend Jenny Greenteeth has, which may just be because they have known each other for so long and other fae are disappearing from the world. 3 trials to get a weapon that could banish the evil all the while carrying the sword that could and will eventually kill the evil. This Jenny Greenteeth is the lady in the lake and the town used to be Camelot the heart of the kingdom which is why the evil was drawn there. They all nearly die but win the day. I didn't quite get the bit where Jenny slits the woman's throat and then throws her in the lake with the sword, which saves her as it wasn't that clear to me that Jenny knew the sword would save her...anyway it all seemed to work but I did find that bit confusing - just didn't care enough to reread the section to 'get' it just rolled with the I'm confused section.

An ok read, mostly easy and quick but not the magic joyful reading experience I was looking for.
